Introduction: The Problem with Summit-Only Thinking
Most people only celebrate big wins when they reach the summit in their journey up the mountains in their lives. For example, they celebrate promotions, goal completions, weight loss, and awards they receive. But what about all the small successes that led to those major achievements?
Waiting for the summit moment can lead to burnout, frustration, or feeling like progress isn’t enough. If you focus on the end goal, you may fail to see the small successes that are leading you toward your ultimate goal.
Real fulfillment comes when we learn to celebrate the climb – the small steps, growth moments, and lessons along the way. Life is a journey, and the summit is only one step on your life’s journey. Many more steps lead to the summit, and in this article we will look at the importance of celebrating the many milestones you achieve while striving to reach significant goals in your life.
The Climb is Where Growth Happens
Reaching the summit is only one moment in your life. The climb is the process of reaching the summit. In the climb you develop skills, strength, resilience, and perspective. The person you become while climbing is the real reward.
Every decision you make and every result you experience while striving to reach the summit shapes who you are. When you celebrate the choices and actions that lead to success in your life, you will increase the chance that you will make similar choices and take similar actions in the future.
Why Celebrating the Journey Matters
Celebrating your journey has many benefits. It fuels your motivation, it builds gratitude, and it creates joy in the present.
It has been said that progress fuels progress. As you see yourself succeeding, you will be more motivated to continues the processes that led you to that success. This will reinforce the positive habits and processes that lead to the results you most want in life.
Small celebrations keep energy and momentum high. It helps you to see the positives in your life, and it can give you the energy to keep making the choices and taking the actions to keep experiencing these small successes.
Celebrating along the way helps you notice what’s good right now, not just what’s next. This builds gratitude. It helps you appreciate the things that lead to your success.
Life happens in the journey – not just at the destination. This means that celebrating the journey creates joy in the present. This means you don’t have to wait until you reach the summit to celebrate your success.
How to Celebrate the Climb in Everyday Life
So how do you celebrate your journey towards the summit? You do so by tacking tiny wins. What is a tiny win? It is making progress on your goals, even by a little.
Use a journal, app, or calendar to record daily or weekly progress. For example, I track my weight using the LoseIt app on my phone. This allows me to see my progress. I have also started using this app to track everything I eat.
When celebrating the climb, celebrate consistency, not just results. Every time you take consistent action to make progress on your goals, that is a success worth celebrating. For example, I have now been successfully tracking everything I eat for more than two weeks. This is consistent action worth celebrating.
Another important aspect of celebrating the climb is to reflect on your journey regularly. Every week I do a weekly review where I identify my successes for the week. This helps me to see the successes in my life and to identify important milestones on my journey to the summit.
As part of your regular reflection, ask yourself “What did I learn this week?” You can also identify what challenged you and how you grew. This helps you to see successes in your life that you would not notice otherwise.
Another way to celebrate your journey is to reward effort, not just outcomes. Treat yourself for showing up, learning, or pushing through a hard day. For example, I am working to change my habits and lose weight. The summit for this journey is to reach my goal weight, but it is also important that I celebrate my efforts, not just my results.
It also helps to share your journey with others. Encourage them by sharing your in-progress story – not just the highlight reel. People may be impressed when you reach the summit, but they will be more inspired as they you see you making progress on your journey.
Milestones In Toastmasters
As a Toastmaster, the summit of your journey is earning the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) award. This is an award that recognizes the speaking and leadership accomplishments you achieved during that journey. But the final award, your DTM, is only the summit of your journey.
As a Toastmaster working towards your DTM award, you experience several milestones you can celebrate to recognize your progress towards your DTM. For example, your Ice Breaker speech, which is your very first speech as a Toastmaster, is a chance to celebrate. Even taking on your first speaking role at a club meeting can be a chance to celebrate. For example, being the grammarian for a club meeting for the first time is an important milestone.
In Toastmasters, we regularly celebrate member achievements as they complete a level in the Toastmasters Pathways program. Each level completed is a new milestone to celebrate. It is a step that moves you closer to your DTM award. It means you have successfully completed speech projects and/or leadership projects.
Volunteering for a leadership role for your club or district is another opportunity to celebrate an important milestone on your journey to your DTM award. And you can celebrate your successes during your year as a volunteer leader as well.
Earning your DTM will be a significant achievement and milestone on your Toastmasters journey, but it is not the only success you can celebrate. Remember to celebrate all your small successes and milestones as you journey toward the summit that is your DTM award.
Conclusion
Celebrating the climb, not just the summit, is important to self-motivation and success. Depending on your journey, the summit can be a long way in the future, maybe even months or years ahead. With such a long journey it can be easy to lose motivation. But if you celebrate important milestones on your journey, you can increase your motivation and find satisfaction with your successful steps on your way to the summit.
Don’t wait until you reach the top to feel proud of what you’re accomplishing. Celebrate the climb – that’s where life happens.
