I enjoy studying leadership and I have read many books on the subject. I was also curious what AI would define as the traits of an effective leader, so I asked ChatGPT to give me five traits of effective leaders. The traits that this AI program came up with are:
- Empathy
- Vision
- Resilience
- Decisiveness
- Integrity
These are key ingredients to making you an effective leader, and I am going to explore in this article what it means to possess these five traits.

Empathy
According to ChatGPT: “Effective leaders understand and relate to the emotions and experiences of their team members. Understanding different perspectives fosters a supportive and collaborative work environment.”
When you are an empathetic leader, people will feel comfortable approaching you when they have problems. They will be able to trust you and they will know that you will listen to them and will be understanding. They will know that you won’t judge them, and this will lead to an environment where team members are open and honest with their leaders.
Consider the alternative. A manager who is uncaring or judgemental when people come to him with their problems. This will lead to a lack of trust and people may hide any problems they are facing out of fear of how their manager will react.
Empathy also means be willing to accept other perspectives. It means seeing both sides of a situation, not just your own. When you embrace this is a leader, people will be more open to sharing their ideas and collaborating with the team.
Vision
Having a clear vision helps to align your team to work toward a common goal. It gives you direction and purpose. A clear vision also helps to motivate and inspire your team, and it can give meaning to their efforts.
As a leader, make sure your team has a vision to work towards. Communicate that vision regularly. It is also important to let your team have a say in the vision. If your team members feel like they can contribute to the team’s vision, they will be more motivated to carry out that vision because they will feel an ownership for that vision because they helped to create it.
For example, back when I did my first high performance leadership project as a Toastmaster, I worked with my team to create a vision for our project. This vision was a team effort, and it motivated everyone on the team to work toward our common goal of creating a promotional booth training program.
Resilience
What is your approach to challenges? Do you fear failure and back down from challenges, or do you embrace challenges and move through failure to success?
Being resilient is a key trait of an effective leader. It means you adapt to failure and setbacks, and you move forward despite them.
Resilient leaders are quick to recover from difficulties they encounter. They continue to lead effectively, even when times are tough. They also don’t break down when faced with a challenge, and they remain as an example of a calm and collected person who navigates challenges with a clear head.
Leadership often involves facing challenges and setbacks. Resilient leaders can recover quickly from difficulties, maintaining their composure and continuing to lead effectively. This trait is crucial in times of crisis or change.
Decisiveness
Leaders often have to make critical decisions in times of crisis or when under pressure. In these situations, teams need a leader who doesn’t buckle under the pressure and who makes tough and timely decisions. A leader also makes the right decisions, which are not necessarily the easy or most obvious decisions.
For me, a tough decision I had to make as a leader was where to run the division level speech for my Toastmasters division. My division includes clubs in both the United States and Canada. This means there are challenges when picking a location because it is guaranteed that some members will have to cross the border no matter which location I pick for the contest.
I considered the situation and decided to have the contest in Canada. Most district events happen in the US, so I decided to have my division’s contest in Canada. Another consideration that led me to choose Canada is that I have a chief judge for my contest who is coming from Toronto Canada, which is a 4-hour drive to where I plan to run the contest. It would be an extra burden for him to cross the border in addition to his 4-hour commute, so this contributed to my final decision on the contest location.
When you have a tough decision to make, be sure to consider all sides of the situation. You can review the options with your team to get their input, but it ultimately falls to you as the leader to make the final decision.
When faced with a tough choice, don’t agonize over the decision. Be decisive and make a clear decision.
Integrity
Trust is essential in leadership, and one of the best ways to build trust is to act with integrity. Do you act with integrity? Do you follow through on what you say you will do? Are you consistent? Are you honest with your team?
These are just some aspects of acting with integrity, which is the foundation for effective leadership. Integrity is essential for creating trust amongst team members. Without trust, teams do not function well.
Stephen M. R. Covey wrote a book on trust called “The Speed of Trust”. In it he explains how teams move faster when they have a culture of trust and respect, whereas things grind to a halt in an environment where there is a lack of trust.
I have worked with some team members over the years who are not reliable. They commit to attending a meeting, but then they don’t always show up. This means they are not acting with integrity. It means they are not someone I can count on because they are not consistent in following through on their commitments. Ultimately, I learned that I cannot rely on these people when it matters most because they have a track record of inconsistency, and I never know if they will show up or if they will follow through on their assignments.
On the contrary, I have also worked with team members who have acted with integrity. One of these team members is Liban. He consistently attends planning meetings for projects we are working on. I also trusted him to act on my behalf to visit a Toastmasters club in my area when I could not visit that club myself. I know I can rely on Liban because he always follows through on the commitments he makes, and if something comes up that prevents him from honoring those commitments, he informs me, so I know to reschedule our meeting or to find someone else to visit a club in my area.
Conclusion
These five traits – empathy, vision, resilience, decisiveness, and integrity – are traits that all effective leaders possess. Empathy helps you to understand and relate to your team members. Vision gives you and your team direction and purpose. Resilience helps you and your team persevere when times get tough. Decisiveness helps you to make key decisions in a timely manner. And integrity builds trust and ensures that you’re someone your team can rely on.
I encourage you to embrace these traits, whether you are currently serving as a leader or not. With these traits you will be someone people can trust and rely on.
