Why Kalculated Decisions?

Posted by

I started my blog to write about leadership, management, public speaking, software development and training. These are topics I am passionate about and the title I have chosen for my blog is Kalculated Decisions.

When my brother first learned about my new blog he said he liked the name of my blog and he wondered how the title Kalculated Decisions relates to the topics I will be writing about. He even suggested I could answer this in my next article.

What a great idea!  Here is my answer to the question: “Why Kaclulated Decisions?”

Why do I like the title “Kalculated Decisions”?

A manager at work once told me I am the most highly motivated and organized person he knows. I certainly like to be organized and I am also very analytical. I like to make plans, set goals and to carefully prepare for my projects at work.

I create checklists and break down large projects into smaller pieces. This allows me to have smaller tasks to accomplish as well as a system to keep track of what has been completed and what still needs to be done.

You could call all of this making calculated decisions. I like to have a clear picture before moving forward. I also like to have reminders so I don’t forgot about important steps or required resources.

The title of my blog, Kalculated Decisions, captures all of this. It explains how I think.

So why the “K” in “Kalculated”?

Even the most analytical people in the word still like to have fun! Changing the “C” in “Calculated” to a “K” makes my blog title more fun and memorable.

What about the topics I will be writing about? How does the title Kalculated Decisions relate to leadership, management, public speaking, software development and training?

Software Development

Computer programmers have to make important decisions when they are writing code. There are choices that determine how a software application appears to end users. Application data needs to be stored somewhere. Where will this be?

Math is also an important factor in the software development world. How long will it take you to write the code? How much time will it take to test the application? How long until the application can be released to clients? As a software developer, you must create these estimates to calculate the time required to complete your project.

Software development requires calculated decisions!

Leadership and Management

Leadership is about providing direction, support and encouragement to your team members. Management is keeping track of the project and making sure things get done efficiently and on time. Done right, leadership and management will both ensure successful completion of a project.

When you are leading a team, you need to provide them with a vision. This gives your team a direction. It helps inspire them to move forward and achieve the goals for their project. It also ensures the team moves in the right direction.

How do you create a vision? By deciding what you want to achieve.

As a manager, you will track the team’s progress so you will know if they are achieving their goals and completing their assigned tasks. This requires project metrics that you can track and measure. With the proper metrics you can calculate both the expected cost and the timeline for your project.

Leadership and management both require calculated decisions!

Public Speaking and Training

Being a public speaker or trainer also requires careful decisions and calculations.

Decisions you need to make as a speaker and trainer include:

  • What topics will you speak on?
  • Who is your audience?
  • What equipment will you use in your presentations?

Calculations also come into play as a speaker and trainer. How much time will you allot to your speech? How many different sections will your speech have? How much time will each of those sections require?

If you work as a paid professional speaker you need to create a budget. What will it cost to purchase the supplies and equipment you will use in your presentations? How much will you charge? How much time will you invest in creating and practicing your presentations?

Public speaking and training both require calculated decisions!

Why Kalculated Decisions?

Because the right decisions will lead to success as a software developer, leader, manager, speaker and trainer. Because the right calculations can measure your progress and forecast your future. Because calculated decisions will move you closer to your goals and to the successful completion of your projects.

I chose the title Kalculated Decisions as the title for my blog because it captures how I think and I think it is a fun and memorable title to have for my blog.
